Midnight Golf
The Midnight Golf Program (MGP) is a Detroit based program founded in 2001 by Renee’ Fluker, a single mom and social worker. Midnight Golf started as an offshoot of similar program, Midnight Basketball, that encouraged students to stay off the streets and participate in supervised sports programs. As for the inspiration of the name Midnight Golf, Renee’ Fluker says, “Playing golf at night is impossible unless someone shines a light. The program uses the game of golf to give young people a brighter vision of their future.”
In 2001, Fluker started MGP started with 17 students. Currently, the program reaches 250 students in the metro Detroit area. Geared toward high-risk students, the program includes a 30-week curriculum, exposing them to a variety of topics including financial literacy, conflict resolution, college and career readiness and much more. The students also participate in the annual “Road Trip for Success College Tour”.
Ninety-five percent of MGP graduates attend college, 85% attend a 4-year university and 70% ultimately gain a 4-year degree. This rate is 5 times the rate of Detroit students without support.
Realizing the impact the program has had on underserved youth in the Detroit area, TNL board members, Kim and Shawn Stafford, began supporting MGP in 2016. The TNL Foundation will continue to donate to the MGP as it aligns with TNL’s core focus of ending the cycles of poverty, focusing on economic empowerment through skill development and wealth creation.
